How Knauf Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Knauf makes solid spray foam products, but every material has weak points. These are the five we see most often in Los Angeles homes:

  • Knauf Sealection 500 open-cell shrinkage in Valley heat. Open-cell foam depends on its chemical reaction completing fully during install. If the substrate temperature drops below the spec when it’s sprayed, or if the A and B sides aren’t at the exact right temperature, the foam cures with internal stress. In Sun Valley and Sylmar attics that bake at 140°F in August, under-cured open-cell can pull back from roof decking a quarter inch or more. We see this on houses insulated between 2015 and 2019 more than anywhere else. The fix isn’t another layer of the same product. We remove the delaminated section, check the decking for cracks, and re-spray with a proper substrate temperature log so the foam bonds the way it should.
  • Knauf Heatlok HFO Pro closed-cell with brittle edges on rim joists. Closed-cell foam is rigid by design, but when it’s applied too thick in a single pass, the exothermic reaction gets away from the installer. The foam cures with a skin that looks fine on the surface but crumbles at the cut line. We find this on rim joist jobs under older Los Angeles hillside homes where the foundation wall stays damp. Moisture behind the foam keeps the bond face wet, and freeze-thaw isn’t a thing here, but trapped moisture against the mudsill starts rot. We cut back the bad foam, dry the cavity, and reapply in thinner lifts so the chemistry stays controlled. If you see foam that looks like a croissant at the edges, call us before the rim joist itself goes soft.
  • Knauf Sealection Agribalance odor issues after install. This is the one homeowners call about at 2 a.m. because it smells wrong. Agribalance uses a soybean-oil-based polyol blend, and if it’s sprayed too cold or too thick, the bio content doesn’t fully react. The result is a lingering oily smell that gets worse when the attic heats up. Re-heating the space with a professional thermal cure usually drives the reaction to completion and kills the odor. We’ve done this enough to know the temperature curve and time it needs, and we don’t leave until the smell is gone, not just faint.
  • Knauf Jet Stream Ultra low-density foam that never reached full loft. Low-density open-cell in a cathedral ceiling should expand to fill the cavity. If your roofer vented poorly and there’s wind wash through the ridge vent, the foam can cure short and leave a gap you can’t see from the attic hatch. We troubleshoot this with a thermal camera to find cold stripes before we add foam. More foam on top of a void doesn’t fix the void; you have to hit the cavity from the inside.
  • Knauf open-cell in unvented Los Angeles attics with no vapor control. Open-cell is air-permeable. In an unvented attic, that means humid air from the house migrates up through the foam and condenses on the underside of the roof sheathing. In a coastal climate this matters less, but in the San Fernando Valley during winter, nighttime temps drop far enough to hit dew point on the decking. If you have Knauf open-cell in an unvented attic and you’re seeing dark streaks on the sheathing, that’s condensation, not a leak. The fix is either an intumescent vapor coating over the foam or switching to closed-cell at the problem plane. We’ll diagnose it with a moisture meter before recommending anything.

Our Knauf Spray Foam Insulation Process

We don’t treat Knauf like a mystery box. Here’s how a job runs, from your first call to the written guarantee:

  1. 1
You call, a person answers. A live person takes your info at (213) 232-7269, 24/7. No voicemail maze. We schedule a site visit that fits your day.
  2. 2
We inspect and diagnose. We look at the existing foam, the sheathing, the ventilation, and the moisture picture. Glenn Hartley has been reading attics across the LA basin for nearly two decades, and he takes the time to explain what he’s seeing before anyone touches a hose.
  3. 3
You get a written price. The Kingswell Way starts with this: an exact number on paper before any work starts. That price doesn’t move at the door.
  4. 4
We do the work clean. Background-checked, uniformed techs arrive in the window we gave you. We lay down floor protection, mask off the work area, and spray. Any Knauf refuse comes out same day.
  5. 5
We test and verify. We use a moisture meter and thermal camera to confirm the foam is bonded, the coverage is complete, and the loft is what spec calls for on the particular Knauf line.
  6. 6
You get the guarantee in writing. Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge.

What Knauf Spray Foam Insulation Costs in Los Angeles

Most Knauf spray foam jobs in Los Angeles fall into these ranges, depending on square footage, foam type, and accessibility. These are the honest numbers we use on our own estimates:

  • Open-cell rim joist package (typical 2,000 sq ft home): $1,200 – $2,100
  • Closed-cell rim joist package: $1,800 – $3,200
  • Attic floor open-cell full coverage (1,000 sq ft attic): $2,800 – $4,800
  • Roof deck closed-cell (unvented, 1,200 sq ft roof): $6,500 – $9,800
  • Garage ceiling open-cell (space above garage): $950 – $1,700

What moves the price: access (crawlspace vs full attic), old foam removal, moisture remediation, and whether you’re doing open-cell or closed-cell. Closed-cell costs more per board foot because it packs more R-value and handles moisture differently. Call (213) 232-7269 for a free estimate with an exact written number. We don’t guess, and we don’t change it later.

Why Los Angeles Homeowners Call Woolsey Insulation Los Angeles for Knauf Work

We’ve been part of the Kingswell family of independently owned insulation companies since 2002, and we work with eight leading brands: Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber. When you’ve got Knauf in your walls, we’re not going to tell you to tear it all out and switch brands. We fix what’s failing and recommend a replacement only when the numbers back it up. That’s the difference between a contractor selling product and a contractor solving a problem.

Our techs are background-checked and uniformed, so you know exactly who’s coming into your home. We answer the phone 24/7 with a live person. And every job we do in Los Angeles, from Sylmar to San Pedro, carries a written guarantee, not a handshake. Good insulation shouldn’t need a sales pitch, and we’d rather let the energy bills tell the story.
